At the turn of the century, there was a mass movement of Jewish settlement in Palestine, which was organized by European Zionists as an attempt meant to secure the future of usually persecuted Jewish communities. This movement was highly political in nature, and it was also justified by the claimed Jewish significance of Jerusalem and other holy sites in Palestine. After the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 and the British Empire’s acquisition of the Mandate of Palestine, Jewish Zionists began settling and purchasing land in Palestine until Israel was declared an official state in 1948, three years after the end of World War II and the Holocaust.

The early story of the land on which these two Lower Plenty courses now stand was recounted in the last post, largely through the words of James Willis who kept a diary of his brother Edward’s squatting activities on the Plenty River in 1837. That brief squatting era was over before anyone quite noticed it had happened and the Willis brothers moved on, Edward to an eventual career in Geelong and Richard onto the Plenty River upstream. Following their departure the land on the west bank passed from 1842 into the hands of John and Robert Bakewell at “Yallambee”, but what of the land on the east bank, on the ground that made up the greater part of the Willis run?.
Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is also called Judastree because it resembles a closely related Mediterranean plant Cercis siliquastrum from which the betrayer of Jesus, Judas Iscariot, was believed to have hung himself. The redbud range extends from Connecticut and southern New York west to Nebraska and south to Florida, Texas, and even northern Mexico. It prefers limestone and diabase soils, which are mostly limited to the southern part of Pennsylvania in creek and river valleys..
